The Invisalign System

WASHINGTON, April 20, 2011 /PR Newswire-US Newswire/ -- An amalgam of consumer groups today applauded a move by the U.S. government to support the 'phase down' of mercury amalgam dental fillings.

In a significant strengthening of a previous US Food & Drug Administration position, the new U.S. position was submitted to the "Mercury International Negotiation Committee." It calls for a "phase down, with the goal of eventual phase out by all Parties, of mercury amalgam."
In 2009, with U.S. leadership, the Governing Council of the United Nations Environmental Program, agreed to develop a global legally binding treaty on mercury. The goal is to complete negotiations before the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum in 2013.
The State Department submission, for the upcoming third round of negotiations, also called for:

• "Educating patients and parents (about amalgam) in order to protect children and foetuses," and

• "Training of dental professionals on the environmental impacts of mercury in dental amalgams."

"This is consistent with the direction several nations have taken to phase out amalgam. The U.S. position marks the beginning of the end of amalgam globally," said Charlie Brown, national counsel of Consumers for Dental Choice.

Samantha is Maxing Your Hygine

Natural eye care is a term coined by Sydney optometrist Jenny Livanos to describe a holistic approach to vision improvement. This can be done with better diet, lifestyle, vision exercises, spectacle script reduction, pinholes and optimal visual and work habits.

Many people are not keen on relying on glasses and want to stop their eyes deteriorating. Others have eye diseases that they want to halt. Children's visual problems can also be assisted. This approach works for all ages and conditions.

The eyes are the window to the soul, and the body and brain! Jenny looks at the whole person -diet, exercise, stress, relationships and work demands to advise a program for better vision. Her focus is on assisting the body's inherent potential for self-healing.

Techniques are based on the Bates Method, a series of eye exercises formulated by eye specialist Dr William Bates about 90 years ago. Dr Bates believed that physical and emotional stress adversely affected our vision. Jenny has trained with Dr Janet Goodrich in the 1990's, a best-selling author who successfully expanded on his techniques to include nutrition and emotional healing.

"We have natural eye care products like pinholes, books and programs to support your vision." Jenny Livanos has been a holistic optometrist for over 22 years and has qualifications in nutrition, hypnosis, iridology and behavioural optometry. She works holistically with care and empathy, networking with other health practitioners and keeps up to date with the latest research on vision and natural health. She regularly organises overseas speakers to further educate and assist her clients.

Prevention is better than cure! So ensure you have an eye test every year by an optometrist.

News at BCD

Having recently cut down her time at BCD to 3 days a week Aushi is devoting more of her time to further education. In addition to recently receiving accreditation to prescribe Invisalign orthodontic treatment she will be attending some more courses over the next few months.

Aushi will also be travelling to America in August to attend the annual IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) conference where she will begin her accreditation process with the Academy.

“The IAOMT Accreditation Program is the pathway to the future of dentistry. The medical and dental communities are finally coming to the realization that the oral cavity is indeed part of the body, and that dental health and therapy cannot be divorced from systemic health. Even patients are now demanding "qualified" or "specially trained" biocompatible dentists.”

“Accreditation by the IAOMT will certify to the public that a member has been trained and tested in the basics of biocompatible dentistry, including current methods for safe removal of dental amalgam.”

In this rapidly evolving field and approach to dentistry Aushi is very excited to have the opportunity to bring new research and knowledge back to BCD. Stay tuned to future newsletters where we’re sure she will share any new research and concepts she may have learnt!
